FAQs
What share of sales do I get?
We split all income (that means after a retailer has taken their share) 50/50 between ourselves and any contributors to a book. If the story is in a collection, then the 50% authors’ allocation will be divided equally between all contributors; note that House of Erotica collections usually consist of five authors but this can vary. For edited collections, the editor will have a slightly higher share from this 50%.
Do you offer advances?
We do not; as time progresses and the market continues to evolve, fewer and fewer publishers are giving advances, preferring – as we do – to give higher percentages of income but without an advance.
What rights do I have to give you?
We require exclusive rights to your stories. If you were to submit a story to one of our anthologies, then go and sell it elsewhere, then that particular anthology is no longer special. You may be interested to know however that when a reasonable amount a time has elapsed since the initial release of the anthology, we may publish the story in other collections, ensuring even more opportunities for you to earn royalties from it.
How long is the contract term?
Our contractual term is six years. This may seem like a long time to an inexperienced author, however we invest a great deal of time and money into our titles; the term ensures that we both have a reasonable chance of making back on this investment. It is also shorter than many traditional publishing contracts, some of which used to be for thirty years or more!
(For all non-edited collections) Will you edit my book or story?
Generally we do not fully edit stories (although we do sometimes find we need to make the odd correction here and there when reading through). We expect our authors to send over what they consider are finalised stories, and have found that our most successful authors prefer this. We have every confidence that if you can write a good story then you can look at it critically and edit it too. Of course, we do have a number of proof-readers available if you feel the necessity, but there would be a charge for their time.
What is the royalty payment threshold?
Our payment threshold is £50 - and there is no movement on this. We don’t want to spend time that we could be producing new anthologies on making relatively small payments to hundreds of individuals – and most people we speak to prefer to get an amount that they notice! Obviously, the more stories you have then the more likely you are to receive a payment each month.
How often do I get a sales report?
You will receive a sales report each month, as long as your book has sold at least one copy. It can take around three months for you to receive your first report, as most retailers pay us a month or quarter in arrears after they sell your book to a consumer – we only report a sale to you when the money is ready for us to pay you.
